Lagos APC rally, blames Ambode, others

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted to the violence that erupted during the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship rally in Lagos State.
Fani-Kayode claimed that the violence was some kind of ritual and blood sacrifice to kickstart the campaign.
Recall that a staunch supporter of the APC and factional leader of the NURTW in Oshodi area of Lagos, Musiliu Akinsanya popularity called MC Oluomo was stabbed in the neck and is currently receiving treatment. This happened during a governorship campaign rally in Ikeja area of Lagos State, yesterday.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain has alleged that the APC was a ”coven of Rabia-loving fundamentalists, ritualists, cultists, devil-worshippers and men of violence and blood.”
In a post on his Facebook, Fani-Kayode wrote: ”People are being slaughtered before his very eyes and Ambode keeps on making his speech as if nothing extraordinary was happening? This is clearly some kind of ritual and blood sacrifice to kick off their campaign in Lagos state.

Buhari to take action soon

The President Muhammadu Buhari has just said that he will take action regarding the case of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris in due course.

Buhari said this during an interview aired on Arise TV which was monitored by our correspondent.

There have been growing demands for the IG, who has reached the retirement age of 60, to step aside.

However, there have been speculations that the President is considering extending his tenure till after the elections.

When asked his next line of action, Buhari burst into laughter, mocking those who had threatened to take action against him if he refused to sack Idris.

He, however, said he was not afraid of the IG and would take a decision soon.

The President said, “I don’t think I am afraid of him. And I don’t think I have asked him to mount roadblocks in place such that I’ll lose revenue (if he goes). But I’ll take action.”

Buhari, however, said removing service chiefs or the IG during a time of insecurity is a sensitive matter

SHOCKING; A boy died after the smell from the fish his grandma was cooking.

Fish is one of the eight major food allergies in the US and can be deadly to those allergic. An 11 year-old boy died suddenly after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to the smell of fish being cooked by his grandma. Camron Jean-Pierre was found unconscious in his Brooklyn, New York home on Tuesday, January 1. He was suffering from what police speculate was an apparent adverse reaction to the seafood being cooked at his home. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jean-Pierre’s family told police they were cooking fish when the incident occurred and his grandmother acknowledged that he suffered an apparent allergic reaction, newsmen reported. An urgent care doctor said that inhaling specific fumes can trigger deadly allergic reactions in children, but she was unable to comment on the exact details of Jean-Pierre’s case. Police have not yet confirmed the boy’s cause of death and have not specified what type of fish was cooking when the reaction occurred. Authorities do not suspect any criminality at this point, with no detail offered on whether Camron’s allergies were known before his tragic death

Baby born with her twin inside her stomach

Doctors successfully removed the little girl's dead sibling in an hour-and-a-half-long surgery on Monday.

A baby girl born with her own twin inside her stomach has had the dead sibling successfully removed.

The newborn was born with her 1-pound, 1-ounce sibling inside her after a medical condition called “fetus in fetu” developed during mom Pooja Kumar’s pregnancy.

Despite her swollen stomach at birth, the 6-pound, 9-ounce unnamed girl was discharged from the hospital and returned home to Bhakrodh Sherwan, north India, with her parents.

But after several weeks of colds, stomach ache and stiffness the baby girl was readmitted to Sir Sundarlal Hospital.

Doctors diagnosed fetus in fetu — an abnormality which happens only in one in every 500,000 births.

Surgeons successfully removed the underdeveloped embryo from the 1-month-old girl during an hour-and-a-half operation on Monday.

Images show the surgeon removing a large object with hands, feet, stomach, chest and spinal cord in early development.

The baby girl, who is due to be named next month, is said to be healthy after surgery

Female victim chased by kidnappers into karate school

During an attempted kidnapping, a young woman ran from her attacker and into a North Carolina karate studio where one of the instructors was able to intercept the man running behind her.

The accused has been identified as 46-year-old August Williams. According to local police, Williams attempted to force the victim into his car before she was able to break free and search for help.

At around 9 PM on Thursday, the woman rushed into Bushiken Karate Charlotte Dojo in Charlotte, NC and explained to the staff that a man was trying to harm her. Moments later, Williams entered the facility looking for the woman, which is when he was apprehended by the studio's senior instructor, Randall Ephraim

"There were still some kids in the dojo being picked up by parents and a couple of adult students cleaning up when a young lady came through our doors and stated that someone was trying to harm her," Ephraim told CNN. "Shortly afterward, a big male entered the building. Not knowing what he wanted, I assumed he was inquiring about classes," he continued.

"I asked how I could assist him and he stated that he was there for the lady. She insisted that she did not know him and tried to kidnap her." Ephraim tried asking Williams to leave. However, he refused to do so before becoming violent.

The instructor was able to detain Williams before the police arrived. Ephraim explained that it wasn't an easy feat. "He was very strong... very, very strong. He weighed at least 200 (pounds) and some change, under the influence; very strong powerful individual," the instructor noted.

Captain JD Thomas from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department explained that the outcome could have very different had the karate studio not been there

A tribe that Men kidnap Women as wives

For some tribes in Africa, marriage is seen as a ransom transaction rather than a joining of two people who care for each other.

In Nigeria, with over 250 ethnic groups, there are so many traditions that it’s hard to keep track of them all. When it comes to marriage traditions, the story is the same. However, there are some similarities — man sees woman, proceeds to seek hand-in-marriage from girl’s parents, pays some form of compensation and goes home with wife.

That seems like quite a normal process, right? Well, it hasn’t always been the norm in some areas.

Marriage by kidnapping in Nigeria

Tiv couple in traditional attire on wedding day [Poontoe]

Within the Tiv/Igede tribe of Benue state, marriage in present times is a thing of wealth and celebration, just like in many other parts of Nigeria.

In previous times though, tradition allowed a man who found a girl he likes to organise to kidnap her from the streets. He would hold her hostage and then proceed to negotiate the marriage rights with her parents. The whole process involves gift giving, rituals such as gun firing and warning other intending suitors to keep away from her. After the whole rites, the lady is officially his wife.

This bizarre marriage tradition is so ancient in Tiv culture that it has been phased out over time. Now, marriage is more respectful and the woman has an actual say in the whole process.

While we would like to think that this marriage practice is completely outdated, it is still very much alive among the Latuka tribe of Sudan, and even more bizarre.

The Latuka tribe are a quiet people tucked away in the Southernmost parts of Sudan, who practice subsistence and livestock farming. They have been able to withstand the influence of western religions and technologies in their communities. This is obvious in their enduring practice of marriage by abduction.

Just like in ancient Tiv culture, when a Latuka man sees a woman he likes, he kidnaps her and keeps her hostage, after which he goes to her father’s house with an elder to seek his blessing on their marriage. If the father of the bride agrees, he is expected to show his approval by beating up his prospective son-in-law. However, if the father disagrees, the son-in-law either returns the lady to her parents or marries her anyway. Most times, the man chooses the latter.

The place of tradition in modern times

Bride price and dowries have often caused controversy in these times when we cautiously wade the waters of feminism, while attempting to dismantle patriarchy. In September 2018, several conversations begun after award-winning author and activist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, spoke about the commercialism around marriage, and stated very clearly that she is “not a fan of bride price.”

At her meet and greet in Lagos, she was quoted to say, “If you go back in history, the idea of marriage is different from what it is today. Yes, there was bride price where fundamentally you sort of give things to the bride’s family, but there was also an exchange of gifts… and it was a bit more fluid… In my opinion I think we should just get rid of the whole idea of money. I think it just ruins things.”

While many argued for the need to preserve the culture of bride price, it is important to note that this frightening marriage by abduction, which essentially gives the woman no voice in the whole process of her own marriage, is part of Sudanese culture. So, before we become outraged about how alien and frightening the marriage by abduction is to us, it may as well be justified as part of their “culture” to them.

African culture is no doubt beautiful and deserves to be preserved, but how does one determine what is worth keeping and what should be abolished? Where do we draw the line
